Sigmund Freud Museum

In the house at Berggasse 19 Sigmund Freud lived and worked until 1938, the year of the Nazi Anschluss, when he fled Austria because he and his family were Jewish. Today the apartment where he lived with his wife and children for over 40 years has been transformed into a museum.

The museum is not only a place to honor the famous scientist, it also gives the visitor an excellent opportunity to learn more about the life and work of the founder of psychoanalysis. There are 81 objects on display, among them scientific manuscripts and many personal belongings of Dr. Freud. In a media room, visitors can watch private film documents of the Freud family; these films were shot between 1930 and 1939.

The building also houses the Sigmund Freud Museum library, one of the biggest libraries focusing on psychoanalysis in Europe. The museum is also often used for international symposia and special exhibitions.
