Austria has a well-organized, clean, and efficient health care service. There are agreements with many countries on health care. Check this out in advance if needed, and take out full health insurance in case of doubt. Britain has an agreement with Austria that emergency hospital treatment is free when you show your British passport. Note that generally hospitals and doctors do not accept payments by credit cards. Most medical doctors speak some English. If you need to consult a doctor check out the phone registry under "Ärzte" (doctors). "Praktische Ärzte" are general medical doctors, while "Zahnärzte" are dentists. Opening times are written in the phone book. "nach Vereinbarung" means "to be agreed upon". The phone number 5122078 gives you recorded information on names and telephone numbers of on-duty dentists for emergencies (all the information is in German). You can also check out the newspapers under "Notdienst" (emergency services), which also lists information on pharmacies. "Apotheken" (pharmacies) are usually open Mon-Fri
8 am till noon and 2 pm to 6 pm; 8 am till noon on Saturdays. Many over-the-counter
drugs can be bought in the local "dm" or "Bipa" stores. The emergency number for the ambulance is 144 (no coins needed in public phones). Vienna's largest hospital is the Allgemeines Krankenhaus (AKH):
