This updated and comprehensive dictionary comes from the best of English (British) and German educational publishers: the Oxford University Press and Duden, 'The' authority in German language.
It is visually well-organized and offers enough entries and examples to help you with intermediate to advanced work on German texts. Unfortunately, there is no indication of how to pronounce the individual German words, but there are other sections of interest. First of all, a good grammar reference at the end. It has a glossary of grammatical terms; a summary of German rules; tables of irregular verbs; and information about numbers, weights, and measures. In the middle, a special insert has various pages about life and culture in the German-speaking world as well as samples of letters to help with written communication. The vocabulary has been fully updated to show the new spelling introduced by die deutsche Rechtschreibreform (the German spelling reform).

Despite the title, this is not really a pocket size book. You can take it with you, but it will fit into a good-sized bag or even better, a backpack. If you can carry it, you won't be disappointed though.

This dictionary is still not very small, but fits better the description of 'pocket size' than the book above. However, it does not have all the feature of the Oxford-Duden text. That said, this dictionary is extensive enough for quick reference. It is visually very easy-to-use thanks to the use of color and it shows the pronunciation of the German entries.
In the middle, there is a section with word games, puzzles, crosswords, and so on. It was created to make you practice the German language. The aim is to enlarge your German vocabulary and reinforce your knowledge of the language. As a matter of fact, you can use the dictionary to complete the activities of this section and practice German in a relaxed and fun way.
This text has been updated to the spelling that die deutsche Rechtschreibreform (the German spelling reform) revised in 1998. You will also find more explanations about the reform and charts about the spelling changes at the end of the book.

There are many examples to clarify the use of the words, especially those that may prove difficult. These sentences will help you understand how to use a certain word correctly. There are also special entries about the life and culture in German-speaking countries.
The text always indicates the gender of the German nouns as well as the genitive and the plural endings. The vocabulary has been updated following die deutsche Rechtschreibreform (the German spelling reform) in 1996-98. The old spelling will be accepted until the end of the school year 2004/2005, but since 1998 only the new spelling is taught in school. The entries in this dictionary all use the new, correct spelling.
The 'Language in Use' section in the middle of the dictionary will help with speaking or writing in common situations, e.g. telephone, e-mail, etc. Real-life expressions are divided in several categories such as 'comparisons,' 'apologies,' 'thanks,' and so on.
