This hardcover dictionary
is a top-class reference tool. First of all, it has so many entries
that it can be used by scholars as well as beginners. New words,
common phrases, and idioms are included. There are many examples
to clarify the use of the words, especially those that may prove
difficult. These sentences will help you understand how to use a
certain word correctly. There are also special entries about the
life and culture in German-speaking countries.
The text always indicates the gender of the German nouns as well as
the genitive and the plural endings. The vocabulary has been updated
following die deutsche Rechtschreibreform (the German spelling reform)
in 1996-98. The old spelling will be accepted until the end of the
school year 2004/2005, but since 1998 only the new spelling is taught
in school. The entries in this dictionary all use the new, correct
spelling.
The 'Language in Use' section in the middle of the dictionary will
help with speaking or writing in common situations, e.g. telephone,
e-mail, etc. Real-life expressions are divided in several categories
such as 'comparisons,' 'apologies,' 'thanks,' and so on.
